Key Growing Requirements in the UK
Indoor Cultivation
Most gardenias (Gardenia jasminoides, also known as Cape Jasmine) are tender evergreen shrubs. They prefer indoor temperatures between 15°C and 24°C, with night temperatures ideally remaining above 15°C.
Soil & Compost
Use acidic, lime-free, peat-free ericaceous compost. In hard-water areas, use rainwater where possible to help maintain the appropriate soil acidity.
Light & Humidity
Position gardenias in bright, indirect light and provide high humidity, for example with a pebble tray containing water. Avoid cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, which may cause flower buds to drop.

Summer Outdoors
Potted gardenias can be moved outside to a warm, sheltered patio or dappled shade during the warmest summer months. Bring them indoors before temperatures fall significantly or frost is forecast.

Winter Protection
In a greenhouse or conservatory, keep plants frost-free, preferably above 10°C, and maintain moist but never waterlogged compost. Warmer conditions may be needed to maintain flowering and prevent bud drop.
