Strelitzia nicolai (Giant White Bird of Paradise): Features massive paddle-shaped leaves and produces striking white and black-purple flowers. It is primarily grown as an imposing, jungly indoor houseplant.
Care Requirements
While native to the tropics, Strelitzia can be grown successfully in the UK as a houseplant or in a conservatory.
Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Some direct morning sun is beneficial, but harsh midday sun can scorch the leaves.
Water: Keep the soil consistently moist during the spring and summer, allowing the top 4 to 5 cm to dry out between waterings. In the winter, reduce watering and keep the soil on the drier side.
Temperature: Protect from frost and sudden temperature drops. They prefer a warm environment (18°C to 27°C) and should not be exposed to temperatures below 10°C.
Humidity: Because they originate from coastal forests, they enjoy humid environments. Keep them away from drafty windows or air vents.
